Need help now

Call 911 Call 211 Call or text 988 Domestic violence hotline 800-500-1119

911 is for immediate danger. 211 is Florida’s free line for a shelter, food, housing, and disaster help. If 211 does not connect, which can happen on Wi-Fi calling, open help.fl211.org, enter your ZIP code, and call the 10-digit number for your area. 988 is for a mental-health crisis. The domestic-violence hotline connects a caller to a local certified center. A domestic-violence street address is not on this page.

Florida 211, fl211.org and fl211.org/disaster. 988, 988lifeline.org. Florida Department of Children and Families, domestic violence help. Florida Division of Emergency Management, October 24, 2026, on Wi-Fi calling and the ZIP lookup.

Hurricane or flood

If your county orders an evacuation, leave when they say to leave. The safer place is outside the evacuation area, in a solid building. A home that meets the safety rules for that storm can be the right place to stay.

See shelters that are open now See evacuation orders See open Red Cross shelters

A building on a county shelter list is a designated site. It is a place to go when that county opens it. A locked school is not an open shelter. The county list below is the route to the county page. It is not a list of shelters that are open tonight.

A shelter of last resort is a place people use when they cannot reach a safer building. The Florida Division of Emergency Management says it cannot confirm that a shelter of last resort will stand up to hurricane-force winds.

Homeless tonight

A homeless shelter is a different door from a hurricane shelter. Many are open on ordinary nights. A hurricane list is the buildings a county opens for a storm. Call 211, or the homelessness lead named under your county, and ask what is open tonight.

The Florida Department of Children and Families names a Continuum of Care lead agency for most counties. That agency coordinates help. It may not be the shelter door. Baker, Dixie, and Union were not given a lead agency on the DCF list read for this page. Those three counties use 211.

Veterans can call the National Call Center for Homeless Veterans, 877-424-3838. HUD Find Shelter is a federal search. Confirm the result with the provider before you travel.

DCF Continuum of Care list: myflfamilies.com homelessness. U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs: va.gov/homeless. HUD: hud.gov/findshelter.

Special needs

Special needs shelters are run by the county. They are for people who need more help than a general shelter gives. The Florida Department of Health says you may qualify if you rely on life-sustaining equipment, need a caregiver for daily tasks, have a chronic condition that needs frequent care, need a mobility accommodation, or have no other safe place with medical support. Some people with medical needs can stay in a general shelter. The county decides.

Register before the storm. Special Needs Shelter Registry.

Two county pages print a registration phone. The line registers a person. It does not say a shelter is open. Broward County call center: 954-831-4000. Marion County Emergency Management: 352-369-8100.

The Department of Health says a special-needs kit should include an ID, medical papers, prescription lists, at least 72 hours of medication, the devices you use, batteries and chargers, mobility and hygiene supplies, water, clothing, a blanket, and a charged phone. Basic food and water are provided. A special diet may not be fully covered. A caregiver can come.

Handouts: English, Spanish, Haitian Creole. Full page: Florida Department of Health, special needs shelters.

Florida 211’s disaster page prints the SAIL hotline as 1-800-342-3557.

Pets and service animals

The Florida Department of Health says a trained service animal is typically allowed in a special needs shelter, and that the county sets the rule. Bring food, water, medicine, a leash or harness, and waste bags. Pets are not typically allowed in a special needs shelter. A general shelter may have a separate pet rule. The county page is the page that says whether pets can come.

After the storm

After a federally declared disaster, FEMA disaster assistance is at disasterassistance.gov and 1-800-621-3362. That line is not the way to find an open shelter tonight. For food, housing, utility help, and health care after a storm, call 211.

Your county

Each county has two separate routes. The storm shelter page is the emergency-management link printed by the Florida Division of Emergency Management on November 3, 2026. The homelessness line is the lead agency on the Florida Department of Children and Families Continuum of Care list. The county emergency office number is the phone that county page prints. It is not a notice that a shelter is open. Where no number is shown, the page checked that day does not print a public office phone. Neither route tells you which door is open tonight. Check the open-shelter map, or call, before you travel.

Shelter leads

These are provider leads copied from official county pages. A lead is not a live opening and not a bed count. Call before you go. Domestic-violence shelters are listed by phone only.

Add your shelter

A shelter can put itself on this list. Being listed here is free.

Add your shelter

On the contact form, put the shelter name in Name. Put the public phone in Phone. Put your email in E-mail. In Questions / Comments, include:

  • County
  • What it is: homeless, hurricane, flood, special needs, pets, heat, cold, or the words you use
  • Who it serves
  • Whether people can come on an ordinary night, or only when the county opens it
  • The public web page that already prints the street
  • Anything people should know before they come: intake hours, families, adults, pets

Put a street in the address box when that public page already prints it. A domestic-violence shelter sends a phone and a city. The street stays off this page.

This Is Florida reads the public page, then adds the row. The row appears after that check.

A shelter that also wants to host meets can join separately. Membership is $8 a month. The shelter keeps its own prices. This Is Florida does not take a cut. When someone you refer joins and that membership is paid, you earn a $2 member reward for life. Adults 21 and older. Join for $8 a month.

This Is Florida is not your county, the State of Florida, the American Red Cross, Florida 211, or the Florida Department of Health. This page does not issue an evacuation order. An open shelter can close. Check the open-shelter map and your county page before you travel. The county routes and the provider leads were compiled on November 3, 2026. They are not a live open-now list.
