Near Titusville, a peat-filled pond preserved an extraordinary record of people who lived in Florida thousands of years ago. The Florida historical marker describes burials at Windover from roughly 7,000 to 8,000 years ago and notes the unusual preservation of human remains and associated materials in the wet peat. The site was discovered during modern development in 1982. Its importance comes from what careful archaeological study can teach about ancient lives, burial practices, and the long history of people in this region.
Windover is not an invitation to search, dig, collect, or visit a sensitive location. Archaeological places and human remains deserve protection and respect. Learn through responsible public interpretation and published research, and leave artifacts where they are. The story also reminds us that Florida’s history reaches far beyond written records and continues through the living descendants and communities connected to this land.
