Florida’s Space Coast holds histories from very different eras. The Windover archaeological site near Titusville preserves evidence of people who lived in the region about 7,000–8,000 years ago. Much later, Cape Canaveral became a center for U.S. missile testing after World War II. NASA established the Kennedy Space Center on Merritt Island in 1962, building on the region’s developing launch infrastructure.

The space program brought new jobs, communities, engineering, and global attention to Brevard County. It also changed local landscapes and the way people imagine Florida’s east coast. Connecting Windover and Kennedy Space Center is not a claim that one story led directly to the other; it is a way to see the region’s long timeline, from ancient human communities to modern science and exploration. Public interpretation at authorized museums and visitor facilities is the right way to explore these stories.
