The Seminole Tribe of Florida and the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida are distinct sovereign Tribal Nations with their own governments, histories, communities, and cultural life. Their histories are connected to Indigenous peoples of the Southeast, colonial conflict, removal, and the determination of people who remained in Florida. Those histories continue in the present; they are not limited to a chapter about the past.

The Seminole Tribe shares cultural information through its official channels, and the Tribe’s Historic Preservation Office explains its work protecting Seminole history and heritage. The Miccosukee Tribe also shares its history, while the National Park Service describes its co-stewardship relationship with the Tribe in the Everglades. When learning or writing about either Nation, use that Nation’s own sources, use its preferred names, and avoid speaking for community members. Do not collapse Seminole and Miccosukee identities into one story. Visitors can support respectful learning by attending public programs offered or approved by the communities themselves.
