Orlando’s history reaches back to the 1830s. The City of Orlando’s account describes Fort Gatlin, established in 1838 south of today’s city limits during the Seminole Wars. The fort was part of a military campaign that affected Indigenous communities and the wider region. The modern city developed later, as settlement grew around central Florida’s lakes and transportation routes.

Over time, agriculture, rail connections, and new residents helped shape Orlando. Its later identity as a major visitor destination added another layer to a city that is also home to neighborhoods, schools, businesses, and cultural institutions. The city’s own history page is a useful starting point, while local museums and community histories can add details that a short overview cannot capture. When sharing Orlando’s beginnings, it helps to distinguish the early military presence from the later growth of the municipality and the diverse city people know today.
