Dogs on Florida beaches
Which public beaches allow dogs, the leash rule, and the months when dogs are banned. The rule changes from one town to the next.
The short version
One beach lets dogs run beside the waves. Another requires a short leash. A third allows dogs before breakfast and bans them during the afternoon. “Dog-friendly Florida beach” is only the start. You need the exact stretch of sand, the leash rule, the hours, and whether a permit is required.
Jupiter allows off-leash dogs inside a marked stretch. Nearby Boca Raton uses a permit, a marked stretch, and set hours. For the wider set of state rules, see Florida laws. For the beach list itself, see beaches.
A dog-friendly hotel, campground, or beachfront park does not mean the sand in front of it allows dogs. Florida State Parks commonly allow pets in marked upland areas and prohibit them on the beach. The same split shows up in camping in Florida.
Which months are dogs banned?
There is no single summer or winter schedule that works for every Florida beach.
Some communities restrict hours during certain months. Others prohibit ordinary pets all year except in a designated dog beach. Jacksonville Beach has a seasonal daytime ban. Destin’s published beach rule prohibits pet dogs. It does not offer an off-season exception.
All times below are local.
| Beach or program | Dates | When dogs are allowed |
|---|---|---|
| Jacksonville Beach | April 1–September 30 | Before 9 a.m. and after 5 p.m. Dogs are prohibited from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. |
| Jacksonville Beach | October 1–March 31 | Any hour, still subject to the leash and the other beach rules. |
| Pensacola Beach, two designated dog beaches | May 1–October 31 | 7 a.m. to sunset. The other beaches do not become dog-friendly in winter. |
| Pensacola Beach, two designated dog beaches | November 1–April 30 | Sunrise to sunset. |
| Cocoa Beach, designated section | Standard time | 6–10 a.m. and 4–7 p.m. |
| Cocoa Beach, designated section | Daylight saving time | 6–10 a.m. and 5–9 p.m. |
| Boca Raton Bark Beach | Standard time | Permit holders: 7–9 a.m. and 3 p.m. to sunset, seven days a week. |
| Boca Raton Bark Beach | Daylight saving time | Permit holders: 7–9 a.m. and 5 p.m. to sunset, seven days a week. |
Cocoa Beach and Boca Raton follow the clock change. They do not use a simple “summer starts May 1” rule.
Satellite Beach
Satellite Beach temporarily allowed leashed dogs from January 1 through April 30, 2026, from 5–10 a.m. The city’s published pilot ended at 11:59 p.m. on April 30, 2026, unless the council took further action. The city’s current beach-access page says pets are not allowed on Satellite Beach beaches. Do not treat that pilot as an automatic January–April allowance for later years. Ask the city before you go.
Turtle season is not an automatic whole-beach ban
Not by itself. At Sombrero Beach in Marathon, the city describes turtle nesting from April through October and restrictions near active nests. It says the rest of the beach remains open. Dogs still have to follow the leash rule and stay out of protected areas.
Northeast Florida
These are verified public stretches, not every access point. Where no seasonal cutoff is listed, the cited guidance does not show a routine month-based closure. Temporary closures, wildlife boundaries, and posted hours still apply.
| Beach or area | Leash | Where and when |
|---|---|---|
| Fernandina Beach city beaches | Required at all times | The city confirms dogs are allowed on its beaches. That does not cover nearby state-park beaches. |
| Atlantic Beach | Maximum 12-foot leash on the beach | Leashed dogs are allowed during the day and evening. A narrow exception lets a dog swim unleashed when the owner and the dog are in the Atlantic together. Put the leash back on before you return to the sand. |
| Neptune Beach | Maximum 12-foot physical leash | The ordinance permits dogs year-round. An electronic collar does not replace the physical leash. A dog staying more than 30 minutes needs water and shade. |
| Jacksonville Beach | Maximum 8-foot leash on the sand | Follow the April–September daytime restriction above. Dogs need proof of a current rabies vaccination and must stay off the dunes. The city lists a limited controlled-swimming exception. That is not off-leash walking or fetching. |
| St. Johns County beaches, including Ponte Vedra and Vilano | Maximum 12-foot restraint, including in the water | Dogs are welcome under county rules. Do not apply that permission to a state park or a protected area with its own manager. |
| Flagler Beach, permitted sections | Maximum 8-foot leash | Dogs are allowed north of North 10th Street and south of South 10th Street. The central beach between those streets prohibits ordinary pets. |
Atlantic Beach and Neptune Beach do not use Jacksonville Beach’s seasonal clock just because the shoreline connects. Their official rules differ.
East-central Florida
Volusia County lists four designated dog-friendly beach locations. Dogs must stay on a leash no longer than six feet. The county’s beach guidance limits access to sunrise through sunset.
| Beach or area | Leash | Exact limit |
|---|---|---|
| Ormond Beach dog-friendly section | 6-foot maximum | Between Rockefeller Drive and Milsap Road. Stay inside the marked boundary. |
| Daytona Beach dog-friendly section | 6-foot maximum | Between the Williams Avenue and Seabreeze Boulevard approaches. The county authorized this section to open December 1, 2025. |
| Lighthouse Point Park, Ponce Inlet | 6-foot maximum | Use the designated dog-friendly inlet shoreline. That is not the adjoining oceanfront or a protected wildlife area. |
| Smyrna Dunes Park, New Smyrna Beach | 6-foot maximum | Use the designated dog beach on the inlet side. This is not permission for the rest of New Smyrna’s oceanfront. |
| Cocoa Beach dog-friendly section | 10-foot maximum | Between 4th Street South and the north side of Robert P. Murkshe Memorial Park, during the morning and evening hours above. The city’s current published guidance uses 10 feet. An older code section used 8 feet. Follow the sign that is posted. |
| Canova Beach Park, Brevard County | Leash required | Dogs are welcome on the park’s dog-friendly beach. They need tags showing current licensing and vaccinations. The county lists free parking and no dog-beach admission charge. |
Smyrna Dunes
Visitor guidance for the area says dogs may use the boardwalk before 10 a.m. Sand paths reach the dog beach after that boardwalk restriction starts. Follow the signs. The boardwalk and the beach do not share one clock.
Cocoa Beach entrances
The permission is the named southern section. It is not a citywide pass to walk onto the beach from any parking lot. Use an entrance inside that section, including during the allowed hours.
Southeast Florida
| Beach or area | Leash | Access and timing |
|---|---|---|
| Jupiter dog-friendly beach | Off-leash inside the marked area for an obedient, well-socialized dog under control | About 2.5 miles, from marker 26 at Marcinski Road north to marker 57 at the Carlin Park property line. Leash the dog from the car to the sand. |
| Bark Beach at Spanish River Park, Boca Raton | Off-leash inside the marked area during program hours. Leash on the way in and the way out. | Between lifeguard towers 18 and 20. Each dog needs an entry permit. Open seven days during the morning and seasonal afternoon windows above. |
| Hollywood Dog Beach | Dogs must be controlled. Leashes are required outside Dog Beach. | Between the Pershing and Custer Street lifeguard stands. The city lists sunrise to sunset and no pass required. |
| Haulover Park dog beach, Miami-Dade | Off-leash inside the dog beach. Leash everywhere else. | Between lifeguard towers 2 and 3. Enter through parking lots 3 and 4. The county lists daily access from sunrise to sunset. |
Boca Raton announced seven-day Bark Beach access in February 2026. A permit is still required for each dog, and the hours still apply. Seven days is not all day.
Fort Lauderdale
The city’s current dog-friendly places page lists Canine Beach hours of 6–9 a.m. and 5–7 p.m., a six-foot leash, and a section north of Sunrise Boulevard. A separate official rules document still lists different weekend hours and a permit. Those two publications conflict. Confirm the hours, the boundary, and the permit with Parks and Recreation before a special trip. Do not treat the easier schedule as proof that the other limits are gone.
Miami Beach
The city lists three Bark Beach areas: 21st Street, 53rd Street, and the North Beach area around 81st Street. Dogs must stay inside the authorized area.
The published hours do not match across the city’s own pages. One South Beach page lists November–March mornings from 7–9 a.m. and April–October mornings from 9–11 a.m. The combined Bark Beach page shows a different schedule. Confirm the current dates and hours with Miami Beach Parks and Recreation at 305-861-3616. This guide does not treat either timetable as settled.
Panhandle and Forgotten Coast
| Beach or area | Leash | Access and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Pensacola Beach dog beaches | Required | Only the designated east and west sections: lots 28.5 and 21.5, also called Lot E / walkover 28B and Lot B / walkover 21E. Follow the seasonal hours above. |
| Panama City Beach Dog Beach | Required | The designated beach west of Russell-Fields City Pier at Pier Park. Ordinary pets are not allowed on the rest of the city’s sandy beach. |
| Walton County permitted access | Required, and a permit is required | Permitted dogs may visit from 3:30 p.m. to 8:30 a.m. the next day. Eligibility is limited to qualifying permanent residents or real-property owners. This is not a tourist dog beach. |
| St. George Island, outside the state park | Maximum 6-foot leash | Public beaches outside the state-park boundary welcome leashed dogs. The state park’s beach does not. |
| Cape San Blas and other qualifying Gulf County beaches | Required at all times | The county tourism office describes broad pet-friendly access. It excludes St. Joseph Peninsula State Park, William J. “Billy Joe” Rish Recreation Area, and Eglin Air Force Base property at the Cape’s elbow. |
A Walton County vacation rental can welcome a pet while the beach permit stays unavailable to the guest. The permit belongs to the qualifying owner or permanent resident. It is not transferable. A host’s permit does not cover a guest’s dog.
On Pensacola Beach, the sand between the two dog sections is not a legal path for a dog. Use the access for the section you are visiting.
Tampa Bay and southwest Florida
| Beach or area | Leash | Access and limits |
|---|---|---|
| North Clearwater Beach | Required | The city permits leashed pets north of Somerset Street. The public bathing beach south of that line prohibits ordinary pets. This is not an off-leash dog beach. |
| Honeymoon Island State Park pet beach | Maximum 6-foot hand-held leash, including in the water | Use the designated southern pet beach. The permission does not cover the rest of the island’s beach. The state names this as the exception to the usual state-park beach ban. |
| Fort De Soto dog beach, Pinellas County | Off-leash in the dog beach under voice control | Use the dog-beach access beside the dog park. Other park beaches are not included. The park lists 7 a.m. to sunset. |
| Brohard Paw Park dog beach, Venice | Off-leash in the designated dog beach | The dog park leads to the approved beach. Stay inside the posted boundary. Neighboring South Brohard beach is for people. |
| Lee County Dog Beach, Bonita Springs area | Dogs may run free inside the designated beach | The county lists dawn to dusk. This is a tidal flat. At mid-to-high tide, reaching it may mean wading. |
| Sanibel public beaches, including Bowman’s Beach | Maximum 8-foot leash | Dogs are welcome on public beaches under the local leash rule. Stay out of nesting areas. Do not carry that permission onto separately restricted wildlife land. |
| Fort Myers Beach town beachfront | Maximum 6-foot leash | Dogs are welcome. Little Estero Critical Wildlife Area is excluded. Follow the boundary signs. |
Brohard hours
Venice’s park page lists 7 a.m. to dusk. Sarasota County’s facility page lists 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Both name the same park. Until those pages agree, read the posted schedule or ask the park manager before an early or late visit.
Bonita Beach is not Dog Beach
Lee County’s designated Dog Beach allows dogs to run free. Nearby Barefoot Beach Preserve, managed by Collier County, publishes a no-dogs rule. Use the park name and the entrance that match the rule.
Florida Keys
| Beach | Leash | Access and timing |
|---|---|---|
| Sombrero Beach, Marathon | Required | The city lists 7 a.m. to dusk, daily. Stay out of marked turtle-nest areas during nesting season. |
| Coco Plum Beach, Marathon | Required | The city lists 7:30 a.m. to dusk. This is also a turtle-nesting beach. Stay outside protected areas. |
| Key West Dog Beach | Read the posted leash instruction before you release the dog | The city confirms dog access and swimming at 1500 Vernon Avenue, sunrise to sunset. The facility page does not state an off-leash rule, so this guide does not invent one. |
Key West Dog Beach is one place. It does not mean every public beach on the island allows dogs.
Where ordinary pet dogs are not allowed
These are not “come back after summer” rules unless that agency publishes a seasonal exception.
| Location | What the restriction covers |
|---|---|
| Destin and Okaloosa County beaches | The city’s official guidance says dogs are not allowed on the beaches. A pet-friendly lodging nearby does not change that. |
| Clearwater bathing beach south of Somerset Street | Ordinary pets are prohibited. The leashed area is north of Somerset Street. |
| Sarasota County beaches outside Brohard | Venice identifies Brohard as the county’s only beach area that permits dogs. Do not assume Siesta Key, Nokomis, or a neighboring Venice beach has the same exception. |
| Satellite Beach city beaches | The current city beach-access page says pets are prohibited. The January–April 2026 pilot is not continuing permission. |
| Canaveral National Seashore beaches and beach boardwalks | Pets are prohibited. Some lagoon-side areas and trails allow pets on a leash no longer than six feet. |
| Florida State Park beaches, generally | Pets are prohibited. The state identifies the designated pet beach at Honeymoon Island as the exception. Pets may still be allowed in other parts of the same park. |
| Barefoot Beach Preserve | Collier County lists no dogs. |
A beach missing from this page is not automatically allowed or banned. It means the exact rule is not established here.
Leash, voice control, and swimming
Does a leash make a prohibited beach legal? No. A leash satisfies a leash requirement only where the dog is allowed in the first place. A leashed dog still cannot enter a beach that prohibits ordinary pets. Florida State Parks make that split: controlled pets are welcome in many areas, and beaches and other named places are excluded.
Voice control is not a physical leash. Where the rule requires a leash, recall, training, or an electronic collar does not replace it. Neptune Beach’s ordinance says that in plain words.
Bring a sturdy six-foot leash even for an off-leash beach. You will need it in the parking lot, at the entrance, in a crowd, or if conditions change. Still read the local rule.
Can my dog swim without a leash?
Sometimes. The swimming rule is local. Atlantic Beach allows a dog to swim unleashed when the owner and dog are in the ocean together, then the leash goes back on before they return to the sand. St. Johns County’s leash rule applies in the water too. Honeymoon Island also requires the six-foot hand-held leash at the pet beach, including during a dip. Do not copy the swimming rule from the next town.
Service dogs
The pet rules above do not fully describe access for a person using a trained service animal.
Does an emotional-support animal count as a service dog on the beach? No. Under the ADA, a service dog is trained to do work or a task for a person with a disability. An emotional-support animal is not a service animal just because it provides comfort. A vest or a paid certificate does not create that status. A psychiatric service dog trained to perform a disability-related task is different.
Public agencies generally must allow service animals where the public may go, within the limits of the law. The animal has to stay under control. That access does not cancel a closure that applies to the public. Ask the beach manager about disability access when you need it. Do not buy a vest to get around a pet rule. The federal description is on the ADA service-animal page.
Wildlife boundaries
A dog beach can sit next to sand that is still closed to dogs. “Dogs allowed” is not permission to enter dunes, nest enclosures, or a critical wildlife area.
FWC explains that a dog near a nesting colony can make birds leave the nest. Eggs and chicks are then exposed to heat or predators. A leashed dog can still disturb wildlife if you take it too close. Stay well away from nesting or resting birds and follow every posted boundary. Do not let a dog chase shorebirds. Walk around bird groups. Leave wildlife alone. The same care applies to sea-turtle nests and hatchlings.
A safe beach day
- Bring drinking water and shade. Do not count on seawater or a park fountain.
- Watch hot sand and pavement. Take breaks instead of nonstop running.
- Jupiter’s dog-beach guidance also says to watch the surf and rinse salt off the coat afterward.
- Check the water, not only the dog rule. During red tide, FWC warns against letting pets play with dead fish or shoreline foam. Call a veterinarian if a pet gets sick after harmful algae or contaminated water.
- Pick up waste immediately, bag it, and put it in a trash can. Do not bury it or leave it for the tide. Jacksonville Beach prohibits those two shortcuts.
- Have a backup plan. If the beach is closed to dogs, use another permitted place. Do not leave a dog in the car. The National Park Service warns that a vehicle can heat up fast even with the windows partly open.
Five questions before you leave home
- Is this exact section open to dogs? Use its name, its entrance, and its boundary markers.
- What is the rule on this date and at this hour? Check seasonal hours, the clock change, and temporary closures.
- Must the dog stay leashed, and how short is the leash? Check the water rule separately.
- Do you need a permit? Boca Raton’s permit and Walton County’s resident or property-owner permit are not the same thing.
- Are wildlife or safety limits posted? A permitted visit can still stop at a protected area or unsafe water.
Check the beach, not just the town.
